Ride Policies

The policies of Ride for AIDS Chicago help make this ride one of a kind. Should you have questions regarding our policies, contact us. You may be expelled from the ride at any time for violating any of the following policies. Note: Policies are to be followed on training rides, too.

1. Safety
Our first priority on the ride is your safety. Make it your priority too. Please refer to the section on Rider Training for a thorough discussion of safety on the route. Safety is of the utmost importance to everyone involved in the creation of this event. We care about the safety and well-being of all our riders, volunteers and crew. As a rider, you have a responsibility not only to your safety but to the safety of your fellow riders. Riding in a group is different from riding by yourself. Your riding behavior affects not only your life, but others’ lives as well. It can be more dangerous. Unsafe riding behavior is cause for immediate expulsion from the ride. If you are at all unsure about what safe riding behavior is, ask. Never be afraid to ask questions.

2. Helmets
All riders must wear a CPSC, ANSI, Snell, or ASTM approved helmet on the ride and training rides.

3. Earphones/Mobile Phones/Portable Radios
Riders are never permitted to wear earphones or use radios or mobile phones while riding.

4. Drafting/Pace Line
Riders should never draft behind other riders or vehicles, regardless of cycling experience.

5. Alcohol/Drugs
Participants are never to ride or engage in crew activities while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, nor be in possession of such. (Prescription medications approved for use by a doctor or pharmacist are excepted.)

6. Inappropriate Behavior
Participants should never engage in inappropriate behavior, including fighting, use of abusive language, or harassment of others.

7. Directions/Instructions
Participants must always follow directions and instructions given to them by any official, including staff and crew. All riders must stay on the official Ride route.

8. Rules Of The Road
Riders must follow rules of the road at all times.

9. Children/Minors
Children/minors under the age of 18 are neither permitted to participate in training rides nor in the ride itself.

10. Pets
Pets are not allowed on training rides or on the ride itself.

11. Daily Check-In
On both Saturday and Sunday of the ride, in the morning before departure, at lunch pit stop and again in the evening after arrival, you will check-in so that we’ll know where you are. If you leave the route at any time during the day you must contact a crew member.

12. Riding Hours
We will begin each day riding as early as 7:00 a.m. and may cycle until 7:00 p.m on Saturday and 4:00 pm on Sunday. At that time, sweep vehicles will pick up all riders remaining on the road and take them into camp or closing ceremonies.

13. Campsite Courtesy
We will be guests at camp and pit stops. We want our hosts, and you, to have a positive experience on the ride. Please follow these rules: * Don’t litter at camp, at pit stops or on the road. * Use the intended toilet facilities. * Respect the campsite, pit stops and the local communities through which we are passing. * No radios or noise after 9:00 p.m. We will all want to get a good night’s sleep. * No loud noise or loud radios at any time. * Camp only where designated. * Be respectful of crew and volunteers. * Alcohol is not permitted either during the event or while at the camp ground.

14. Leaving the Ride
Riders/Crew who wish to leave the ride prior to its conclusion or who are expelled will be given information and advice on transportation home. Actual transportation and all related costs are your responsibility.
